This episode is about culture, communication differences and how to be a confident speaker when English is not your native language.
Terry O’Reilly is the founder of OBP Australia, a company that helps people who are born overseas to find work and establish themselves in Australia.
Terry has interviewed and advised over 3,000 overseas born professionals over the last 10 years. He has developed a deep understanding of the systemic barriers & cross cultural issues facing newly arrived skilled migrants.
With a long time interest in languages, culture and travel, Terry is passionate about helping others to understand the Australian workplace and culture, improve their communication skills and grow their professional networks.
I was keen to get him on the show, because a lot of non-native English speakers I meet often tell me they lack confidence with speaking english because of their accent, or they’re worried they won’t be understood.
Listen in to find out what you can do if you feel like your accent or level of English is holding you back from achieving the level of success you want.
And even if you are a native English speaker, Terry and I also talk about what we need to be aware of in our own communication so we can also better engage with people who may not understand our cultural references and quirks.
