Yes folks, we’re answering one of life’s big questions this week: how to be happy.
If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll know I completed the 10 day Vipassana silent meditation course in December. It was one of the most challenging experiences of my life. I documented it in detail in last week’s episode.
This week, I am sharing one of the key lessons I learned on the course. And yes, it’s the secret to happiness.
As I have grown older and wiser, I have come to learn that ‘happiness comes from within’. I know this – at an intellectual level.
But (and it’s a big ‘but’) – I’ve often wondered: how does one ‘draw out’ the happiness? If happiness is inside, how do you access it?
What I discovered at Vipassana, is:
Happiness is not about ‘finding’ the happiness, it’s actually about removing the things that make us miserable.
I’ll say that again: to find happiness, you need to remove the things that make you miserable.
And according to the Vipassana teachings, there are two things make us miserable:
- Something unwanted happens, and we create aversion to it (anger, frustration, disappointment, etc)
- Something we want does not happen, and we create attachment to having it
In this episode I share how I found peace and came out of my deep misery during the course, and how I have applied this to other areas of my life.
