Natalia Dewiyani is one of the most inspiring women I know.
She’s a passionate life coach and serial people hugger who has made it her life’s mission to spread joy, laughter and happiness to those around her.
Oh, and to hug 1 million people in her lifetime – including Oprah.
Natalia heads a campaign called Hugs For Change, that raises money to provide children in Colombian slums with clean drinking water and education.
She has done some crazy ‘hug experiments’ to raise awareness for the campaign, for example hugging 438 strangers in 90 minutes whilst blindfolded in the middle of Melbourne city.
In May 2015, Natalia was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer, Ewing’s Sarcoma.
Despite the setbacks and the pain she endured during the aggressive treatment, she kept her positive attitude and desire to bring smiles to the faces of those around her.
She started Laughter with Cancer, posting daily video updates of her treatment and recovery, plus her uplifting messages of hope, positivity and gratitude. She made such an impact, she even got the attention of the Channel 7 News:
When you’re able, you take time for granted. You plan stuff into the future. When you’re going through cancer, you can’t plan anything.
But our conversation isn’t just about how to stay positive through a life-altering experience like cancer. Natalia also has a lot of wisdom to share when it comes to REALLY connecting with people. We talk about how to listen, what Nat learned from her ‘hug experiment’, and why being truly present is so important for building strong relationships.
I hope you enjoy this episode with Natalia Dewiyani, and if you do – please share it!
I’d like to send a thank you to the Bitcoin Group Melbourne and Dale and Peter from the Crypto Goss podcast for letting us use their space for the recording!
Takeaways from this conversation:
- When you’re talking to someone, to really connect, make them feel like they are the most important person in that moment.
- Everyone has the capability to be happy. You can’t control what happens around you, but you can control how you deal with that experience, whether you have a negative reaction or a positive reaction.
- We tend to take time for granted. When you have cancer, you can’t plan into the future at all. So be present, truly present, and appreciate the people around you.
- Take a little bit of time each day to smile at, say hello to, or do something kind for someone else. It doesn’t take much, but it will make someone else’s day just that little bit brighter.
