When people come to me for help with speaking and communication, they often say:
“When I speak, I tend to ramble.”
“When I am presenting, I freeze up.”
“In meetings, my voice shakes and I can’t articulate myself clearly!”
And then their next question is: “How do I fix this problem?”
Now, I can tell you how to fix this problem, but it won’t help.
Because rambling and freezing up and your shaky voice and going red and tripping over your words are NOT the problem.
They are a SYMPTOM of the real problem. And to fix it, we need to identify the CAUSE.
A few weeks ago, my car wouldn’t start. That was a problem. But I knew I had to find the CAUSE of the problem in order to fix it. Simply turning the key in the ignition again and again wouldn’t work.
I discovered the cause of the problem was a flat battery. And the cause behind the flat battery was that I hadn’t replaced it in 12 years!
Once I identified the cause, I was able to replace the battery and voila! Working car.
It’s the exact same principle with communication.
In this episode, I challenge you to think more deeply about the challenges you have with speaking, communication and leadership – and the more self awareness you can develop, and the more you can think deeply about what goes on in your mind and body, the closer you will get to making real, transformational change.
I also share ‘The 5 Why’s’ Technique for getting to the root cause of a problem – it’s a powerful one!
So if you’re tired of experiencing the same nerves and anxiety and communication difficulties over and over again, and you are ready to fix them once and for all, this episode is a must listen.
Now, asking yourself difficult questions and challenging yourself to go deeper is not always easy. This is why having a coach or accountability partner can be so powerful.
